This has been discussed since the show was announced and it seems to have grown to an interesting debate. A debate that has made me think about it all day. And as is my way I find my comparing the issue to other shows.

If a person has no idea who they are and they make choices is the forgotten personality raped.

Because it is similar to amnesia, I of course thought about Jason Bourne. He had no idea who he was or even his own name. And while pursuing the answers he became involved with a woman. Would any sexual activity be considered rape when he regained his memory?

Then I thought about the Christian Slater show from last fall (forget the name). Here was a man who had two separate personalities, one of which was implanted by his employers. His fake personality wed and had children. The original personality had no family and never had even met the wife. Is he being raped?

What about people with DID, which is the basis of the series "United States of Tara". I have only watched the first 4 or 5 eps but all Tara's female alternatives have no desire to be celibate. Tara's husband refuses to sleep with the alternates not because he thinks it is rape but because it would be cheating. If T got lucky would Tara be raped?

And now to the Buffyverse.....you think I could leave that out. When Faith slept with Riley in Buffy's body, was Buffy raped? Buffy was upset that Riley was not able to see it wasn't her, not that she had sex with her body.

If someday Caroline is restored to her body, will she care about what happened when she was not there?

And to put it on the level of real life possibilities. Are porn actresses and actors the victims of rape? These are people who sign contracts to perform whatever the production company designs. Very few have the clout to have an approval over the script or costar. And I think an oh I changed my mind could lead to a breach of contract.

As for why Caroline agreed to become a doll, I got the impression from the brief scene with Adele that Caroline had done something illegal or even may have lead to a death. I think she chose being a Doll over going to jail or worse. If I had to chose from jail (no rape there) or loosing myself for a few years, I might be inclined to be a Doll and hey I bet there is a nice payout when time is up. That is if it is as I assume a contract for specific length of time.

Well I called Lynn this afternoon. I knew she would not be up to it yesterday. There was no answer at her house so I called her mom's. Her nephew answered and told me she and her mom had gone to get the personal stuff out of the car. He gave me her cell# and then gave me the funeral details. But before we got off she came home. We talked for over an hour. She is doing as well as expected. Brit arrives late Tuesday night.

She did wake up before he left yesterday morning and he said he was going to go get a bite and a paper. She assumes he then was heading to his mom's to get some clothes he still had there. Unitl 2 months ago he was staying with mom part of the week while she battled cancer. She is in remission. Lynn told me how last fall Mark, his mom, brother and sister all went to the mountains for a week. They were thinking it might be a final time with their mother. But she came through and now it is a priceless memory.

Lynn asked my husband of course to be a pall bearer. We are driving to Fayetteville on Thursday for the wake that night and funeral Friday afternoon. Mark has broken my 46 year record of never going to a funeral. Damn him.

This morning I flipped through the photo albums and found some old shots. Couple of them were taking when we were young and dumb and full of..... well alcohol.

And I know many of you have met the kid so here is link to her post:

When hubby and I first got together we met another couple, Mark & Lynn. They moved in next door and we socialized a lot. They eventually got married(my husband's brother was the best man) and had a daughter, Brittany. We also got married(M&L were our witnesses) and had a daughter only 17 months younger than theirs. Our lives have stayed entertwined ever since no matter where we lived. Lynn and I at one point worked two blocks apart and ate lunch together almost every day. Lynn and I did all our christmas shopping together. We came experts at yard sale and Black Friday shopping. Most my daughters clothes came from Brit and most my daughters hand-me-downs went to Brit's younger sis. At one point when the girls were in elementary we bought a plot of land in the country and were pleased and shock when Mark and Lynn announced they bought the adjacent lot. We lived there for five years and the two oldest girls became inseperable. Then we relocated to the beach and M&L had an opportunity to buy her child hood home. But we still stayed friends. Brit tried over the years to spend at least one week a summer here. Everytime we make a trip to our home town we have to include a trip to M&L's.

And when Brit got engaged, she came here to go shopping for the honeymoon so my daughter could help her. She got married in Hawaii(where Derek was being stationed) so none of us went but she mailed us pics.

Well today hubby got a call from his brother. A call we could never have expected. Mark was killed in a car accident this morning.

I have called my daughter and she has called Brit in Hawaii. She and Derek hope to fly back to NC tomorrow.

No one knows why Mark got up and went out this morning. And they said there was no visible injuries from the accident. They suspect a heart attack. He is about 3 years younger than hubby and I so he would be only 43.

He leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son. Good bye Mark Wayne Mayr

I was bored so I decided to try a new game. I am going to list one first name beginning with each letter of the alphabet and I want everyone to list a famous "real" person with each name. Sounds silly but I find myself seeing a name and immediately associating with a person so I wondered who you associate with these(spelling varients allowed):

Amber
Beverly
Caroline
David
Edgar
Fernando
George
Harriet
Imogene
Juliet
Katherine
Lawrence
Manuel
Nathan
Olivia
Priscilla
Quincy
Rita
Sonya
Tony
Ursula
Vivien
Xaviar
Yvonne
Zachary

I love to see what people the names evoke. I expect the international reaction to be different. Then try making a list. I want to see who spring to mind with your list.

Has anybody else watched this show? I admit I only checked out the first ep because of the name Tara. Was not expecting much. But I admit to actually finding it fun. The way the family just went with the flow and accepted all personas was actually unexpected and totally refreshing.

I keep reading everyone's posts the last week about this thing called snow.

Well today hubby and I went to the Walmart and I was HOT in my jeans and t-shirt. I would have been more comfortable in shorts. Actually I came home and put on shorts and am still wearing them. I just walked in the bedroom and hubby had a window open. Now I think he is pushing it a bit with that but I am more cold natured than he is. But still there is no way it will be a white christmas here in NC......heck I have had only one white christmas in my entire life and that was in 1989 I think. But even without snow, shorts are bit rare at this time of year even here.

Anyone wanna share your snow?

Not sure if anyone sent a card to the soldier in my post last week but I just got an e-mail from sis and wanted to update ya'll.

Hey Friends, Just got word from the friend of the lil Lance Corporal. Apparently, He is more than overwhelmed by the constant attention and all the gifts and letters. He is, and I quote, "walking around and smilling big like the Koolaid Kid".

If ya have not sent something, it is never to late to make a soldier's day. Now or after Christmas.
angelbuffy: (Santa Sarah)
I know it is not good practice to post e-mails but I thought folks might want to know where to send a card that might mean something.

This time of year finds us sending out Christmas cards to friends and family. I am asking that you add this address to your list this year:

A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Ave,NW
Washington,DC 20307-5001

Its such a small thing to brighten the day of one who has given so much for their country.

Also, one of my friend's daughter is a marine. She noticed that one of her buddies never gets any mail because he was raised in foster care. If you have an extra card, could you send a happy holidays to :
L Cpl Maceo Wiggins
2D Radio BN DET C

FPO AE 09509-3488

He is currently serving in Iraq, is 19 yo and has no famliy. Please, send him some love.

This not some spam e-mail but an actual request from my sister who is a registered nurse and currently working at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, NC (the home of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force)

Please feel free to share these addresses with others.

Monday, hubby and I were stuck in a waiting room for a couple of hours with only each other to talk to. Well after 21 years of marriage that is not a common event.

Well of course the discussion led to our one area of opposition. I am a democrat and he is a republican. Now I say that, but we are both not radical in our views. I have voted for a republican when I believe they are the best candidate based on the issues. He voted against Bush in the last two elections. We both refused to vote for either candidate this time. He actually never made it to the polls and I did but skipped the presidential race.

Well that is not the issue. We started talking and after a few snarky Messiah Obama comments from him we focused on the issues which we mostly agree on. We are both pro choice and the like. Then I brought up an issue I knew we would disagree on. Proposition 8.

He was pleased it passed and I of course think all states should allow gay marriages.

I wanted him to articulate why he was opposed to gays getting married. He said he was not opposed to them having some type of civil union but just not a marriage. I pushed farther and he felt marriage was a religious ceremony and it went against the bible. I reminded him we had a civil ceremony at the magistrates office and not in a church. He responded with the ceremony used refered to god.

I went on to explain to him that gays should have the right to get married by law. Marriage laws are a civil matter. And that it was a matter for the individual churches, temples, mosque. etc whether they would perform a religious ceremony. It was not the government's job to make laws based on religion. A gay couple should be able to get a license and it was up to them to find a church to marry them if they wanted more than a civil wedding. And after a bit he actually agreed.

I think the laws should stop making decisions based on peoples religious beliefs and leave the religious decisions up to the individual churches.

Now if he would just stop going into those radical republican chat rooms spewing their bile. I asked him how he could listen to that shit. His response? Did I really think he agreed with that crap? He just found the retoric interesting. I find it offensive and even scary. Those people make Rush Limbaugh and Jesse Helms look like liberals.
angelbuffy: (IB)
Sorry to interrupt your presidential election coverage but I have much more exciting news.......Elizabeth Dole LOST!!! Ding Dong The Bitch is GONE!!!

For those who do not follow NC politics....in 73 this state elected the ass whipe known as Jesse Helms. Idiots throughout the state kept him there for 30 years until he thankfully retired. For 2003 "Liddy" Dole declared her mother's home in NC as her residence and ran and won Helms seat. And although she is in NC less than 30 days a year she continues to claim to represent us.

Well Kay Hagen just beat her despite some very desperate ad campaigns including accusing Hagen of being an athiest.........something not very popular in the south.

And one more squee that Bev Purdue will be our govenor. And I am also glad to see Mike McIntyre is returning the the House.
angelbuffy: (IB)
Well I went today and got the voting over with thank god.

That said I want to know what everyone thinks of the people that stand outside the polling places handing out their flyers. I myself ignore them. When I get there I already know what I am going to do. And I have no desire to walk around with litter in my hands and have to find a trash can.

Well today I walked past them and avoided making any encouraging eye contact. As I got past the point marking the legal distance they are allowed to be, I thought I was safe. Then I hear a woman going Ma'am, Ma'am, Ma'am as if I am suppose to turn around and get whatever she has. Puh Lease. I do turn around and started to tell her off but my daughter was right behind me and kept me from "starting a scene".

When we went inside I watched the woman in front of us juggling a handful of flyers and even dropping one on her way to her booth. And no she was not reading any of them.

Sad to think how many trees are cut down so people can feel they are "helping" their candidate by harrassing voters with "more" flyers. Not like I have not thrown a reams worth away that have come in the mail.

Oh and I will be so glad for Wednesday. These calls every couple hours with pre-recorded campaign speaches are getting out of hand. Heck after I got home from voting at around 4, I received not 1, not 2, but THREE calls from the McCain Campaign. Plus there was two this morning. Not even mentioning all the calls for the local candidates. The GOP is working overtime with calls and mass mailings trying to get R C Soles out of office.

You know I should put together a series of posts on the insane politics that have occurred in the 11 years I have lived in this county. You couldn't make some of this shit up.
angelbuffy: (Default)
In reading the recent posts by [livejournal.com profile] alleynyc and [livejournal.com profile] trixiefirecra I see that there are no right answers as to what is "politically correct" when referring to people from other countries.

Each continent, country, region have their own personal preferences.

Are people from Argentina offended by being called South Americans? Can someone from Scotland be called British. Who is Dutch? Are all former USSR countries still Russian? Are Canadians and Mexicans offended by the US taking the term Americans? Can all Americans be called Yankees? Is Canucks offensive?

We can all try to use the acceptable terms but we will at times fail but that does not mean we stop trying.
angelbuffy: (Default)
In an upcoming interview with Katie Couric to be aired this week, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than Roe v. Wade.

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.)

I have to go with Furman Vs. Georgia in 1972.

The case lead to a 5-4 vote which struck down federal and state capital punishment laws permitting wide discretion in the application of the death penalty. Characterizing these laws as "arbitrary and capricious," the majority ruled that they constituted cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the due process guarantees of the Fourteenth Amendment.

This decision invalidated most state death penalty laws and converted sentences for death to life in prison. This affected over 600 convicted murders.

But I have to add Gregg vs Georgia in 1976 in which the supreme court validated the new death penalty law.

When you consider the length of appeals processes involved in a death penalty case, when the death penalty was invalidated it affected cases back to 67 and it was 76 until the death penalty was restored we had 10 years of murder cases without it. A very important event for my generation at least to be aware of.
angelbuffy: (Default)
Gakked from just about everyone.

You see this in and then post a fave Buffyverse quote in your LJ. Let's see how long this goes on for.

ANGEL
I was never much for preachers.

Angel: "Saint Bridget's, in Fremont. A convent, built on native burial grounds. The land's cursed, they had eight murders in two years before the whole place burned to the ground - which is nothing compared to what happened at Our Lady of Lochenbee... I have a thing for convents.

Angelus: "Convents - they're just a great big cookie jar."

Angel: "You feel what this place was before they excavated it? The convent - you remember how much I like convents."

Angel: "I like nuns. How did the flying nun fly anyway? Was it god or - magic? What? You think about these things sometimes."

Angel: First I made her insane. Killed everybody she loved. Visited every mental torture on her I could devise. She eventually fled to a convent, and on the day she took her holy orders, I turned her into a demon.

I know some of ya are concerned so I figured I would let ya know what is going on here. For the few who don't know I live on the NC coast just above the SC border. We are all watching the weather very intently.

Here at my house hubby has all the outside batten down and ready for Hanna. We have no plans to evacuate. Normally we stay put unless it reaches level 3 or 4. My hubby just left to go batten down my mom's house. My daughter (yes she is back from Canada) is going to go over there later and stay with mom during the storm. The kid is living in a mobile home with a lot of trees around so we figure she should stay with mom for her own safety and to help my mom if anything goes wrong.

The worst we expect is a possible power outage but we have the generators ready with plenty of gas on hand. And as many know I collect oil lamps so ready on that front.

Now as for Ike we are greatly concerned of course and constantly checking for updates. I may sound very very very selfish and I am sorry to my Floridian friends but I prefer the current projected track more than the one yesterday. The thought of a hurricane of that intensity is scary to say the least.

But I have to reiterate something I have said many times, I am glad to live in a hurricane zone over any other natural disaster area. Unlike the other areas we get ample warning and can react accordingly. Yes we may lose our homes or other possessions but we don't have to lose our lives.

I am also grateful that the giant tree that is ten feet from the back of my house that has worried us because the trunk was becoming hollowed out safely fell over last year and is now a pile of stacked firewood.

Well I am going back to bed because I know I will not want to later.

If you want to get the best updates on the storms I recommend these websites:

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/

and

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

I find them much more informative than the weather channel or weather.com

Well if my situation changes I will try to update. I have battery backup for my computer and modem/router so even if the power goes out I should be able to get on for a couple seconds or so.
angelbuffy: (Chihuahua)
Well today is the first full day of doggie daycare. My sister and her hubby started their vacation to Savannah today and I am taking care of their two younguns.

There younguns are four legged and when you add them to my three you have 20 pitter pattying feet in the house.

I have two chihuahuas and a toy poodle and the niece-dogs are both mini-dauschands.

Hubby is not home today so I get the pleasure of many tongues. Everytime I sit on the sofa I have four bodies vying for my lap. Bailey Mae seems to have no interest in the dop pile.

I am currently in my office behind a baby gate but have the sporatic cry for attention aimed my way. Well I guess I need to leap the gate and go check on the brood and make sure everyone is getting along.
